Ronald Shelley was born and raised in Rugby, England. His early childhood was influenced by his family’s penchant for artistic pursuits and by the magnitude of World War II. He emigrated from England in 1956, arriving in the United States to work as a rodeo cowboy in Texas. He later moved to Florida, working as an actor, landscape designer, illustrator and fine artist.
Mr. Shelley has a seemingly effortless style that belies his mastery of the exacting watercolor technique.
His architectural renderings demonstrate a keen understanding of perspective, design detail and the play of light on buildings. The artist’s skills extend to his graceful depictions of cabbage palms in the Everglades, dramatic tropical skies and the subtleties of Florida’s changing seasons. Whimsy is another hallmark of his style, with fetishistic footwear, fantastic flying machines and factories powered by steel-helmeted engines.
In 2009, the artist began developing Steel Head Sculptures. SHS is a series of metal sculptures embellished with found objects. Representing mankind’s obsession with the power of machinery, the pieces concentrate on the head where ideas for engines are born.
Currently he is developing illustrations for three books in collaboration with his wife, writer Donna M. Shelley.
